The wastewater industry is continuously evolving, and water resource recovery facilities must multi-task: treat the wastewater to ever increasing standards while also recovering valuable nutrients, reducing energy demand, and constantly figuring out ways of making the treatment process more efficient. All of this can only be accomplished through research and technological innovation. Organizations such as the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) make this possible. WERF is America's leading independent scientific research organization dedicated to wastewater and stormwater issues.

With the help of WERF, individual plants and systems across the country are working with cutting edge technologies. For example, DC Water has implemented a program that allows them to identify emerging technologies that will help them keep ahead of upcoming regulatory challenges.
