Synopsis: Is enlightenment sudden or gradual? This is a core question of Zen Buddhism.Korean Zen master Chinul (1158-1210) offers a most thorough treatment of this issue in premodern E Asian literature. Robert Buswell explores the soteriological ramifications of Chinulís distinctive Korean Buddhist schema.

Additional Information: Robert E. Buswell, Jr. is the Irving and Jean Stone Endowed Chair in Humanities at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was president of Association for Asian Studies (AAS), received the prestigious Manhae Grand Prize in Korea, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016.
